Valvoline Advanced Full Synthetic is the full synthetic most people see on the shelf. AMSOIL Signature Series is AMSOIL's top motor oil. Below I compare the two 5W-30s using each company's own product sheet. Where a number isn't published, I leave it blank instead of guessing.
Quick Take
Both list API SQ, ILSAC GF-7A and GM dexos1 Gen 3 for 5W-30 (AMSOIL, Valvoline). AMSOIL publishes a typical NOACK of 5.3% and a drain interval of up to 25,000 miles or one year in normal service (AMSOIL data sheet, AMSOIL oil change interval). Valvoline tells you to follow your owner's manual and doesn't publish typical values for the current formula. All figures are typical values, not specifications. The Valvoline sheet I found with typical values predates its current GF-7A formula, so I left those numbers out.
Drain Intervals
AMSOIL's 25,000-mile rating is for personal vehicles in normal service. Fleet use, heavy idling, frequent towing or dusty roads count as severe service and drop it to 15,000 miles. AMSOIL also says not to go past 12,000 miles or a year on another brand of filter (AMSOIL data sheet, AMSOIL oil change interval). For Advanced Full Synthetic, Valvoline says to follow your owner's manual (Valvoline). Valvoline also sells Full Synthetic Extended Protection, which it launched in 2021 as its most premium motor oil, meeting API SP, ILSAC GF-6 and dexos1 (Valvoline). That announcement doesn't give a drain interval either.
NOACK Volatility
NOACK (ASTM D5800) measures how much oil boils off at high heat. The ILSAC GF-7 limit is 15%. AMSOIL lists 5.3% for Signature Series 5W-30 (AMSOIL data sheet). Valvoline doesn't publish a NOACK number for its current GF-7A formula, so I can't compare them.
High-Mileage Engines
In April 2021 Valvoline launched High Mileage 150k with MaxLife for engines past 150,000 miles (Valvoline). If you have an older engine that's using oil, call me and we'll look at what it needs before picking a product.
Switching Oils
AMSOIL says Signature Series is compatible with other conventional and synthetic oils. It also says mixing shortens the oil's life and that it won't support an extended drain on mixed oil (AMSOIL data sheet, AMSOIL FAQ). AMSOIL also says mixing voids its limited warranty. If you switch, drain it all and put on a new filter.
