Modern ATVs and side-by-sides — Polaris RZR, Ranger and Sportsman, Can-Am Maverick X3 and Defender, Honda Pioneer and Talon, Yamaha YXZ and Wolverine, Kawasaki KRX and Mule — run hotter, harder, and longer than the machines they replaced. Most use a shared engine/transmission sump with a wet clutch, which means the oil is doing three jobs at once: protecting the engine from heat and load, lubricating the gears, and managing wet-clutch friction. AMSOIL synthetic ATV/UTV oils are JASO MA/MA2 wet-clutch certified and engineered specifically for that job — not borrowed from a passenger-car formulation.
AMSOIL offers a full range of synthetic ATV/UTV viscosities — 0W-40 (AFF), 0W-50 (AUV05), 5W-40 (AUV54), 5W-50 (AUV50), 10W-30 (AUV30), and 10W-40 (AUV40). For Polaris RZR, Sportsman, and Ranger most current models call for 0W-50 or 5W-50. Can-Am Maverick X3, Maverick R, Defender, and Outlander typically specify 5W-40 (AUV54). Honda Pioneer/Talon and Yamaha YXZ usually run 5W-40 or 5W-50. The simplest path is to grab the bundled AMSOIL ATV/UTV Kit for Polaris (PKATVUTV) or for Can-Am (CKATVUTV) — each ships with the correct oil and filter for that brand.
Driveline fluid is just as important as engine oil. AMSOIL ATV/UTV Transmission & Differential Fluid (AUDT) covers most non-wet-brake ATV/UTV transmissions and differentials. AMSOIL Powertrain Fluid (AUPT) is the right call for machines with a shared trans/diff/wet-brake sump (most Honda Pioneer/Talon, many Polaris Sportsman). For belt-drive CVT side-by-sides, use AUCVT — the friction profile is built specifically for steel belt grip. Newer DCT-equipped machines like the Can-Am Maverick R and Honda Talon DCT need AUDCT, a wet-DCT-specific fluid that protects clutches under shock load while still lubricating the gears.
ATV/UTV shocks and forks live a hard life — heat, dust, and high cycle counts.
